Thanks Coach Kasi!

This past January, the GT Water Polo team wished a fond farewell to its head coach, Kasi David. Kasi had served as head coach for the previous two years, but has long been a part of Tech Water Polo. Kasi started playing with the team during his graduate school training, and soon assumed the position of assistant coach, under Manny Torres, before taking the reins as head coach. In each of those roles, Kasi has continuously propelled the strong water polo tradition at Georgia Tech, as well as the greater Georgia community. In his final season, the team retook the Southeast Division Championship and hosted the Club Collegiate Water Polo National Tournament. The recent successes of the team, and GT Water Polo’s consistent strength and organization, are in large part due to the dedication and drive of Kasi David.

“Even though I’ve only known Kasi for less than two years, he had a tremendous impact on my life inside and outside the pool. He was one of the reasons why I chose to stick with water polo, and he was one of the reasons that I enjoyed being on this team. His relaxed, but focused attitude helped me improve during my first two years as part of the program and made me like the game itself,” said Vice President Ilya Kovalenko.
Kasi not only oversaw the long tradition of Georgia Tech Water Polo, but also had a large impact on water polo across Georgia. As a coach and referee amongst growing high school programs, and a member of the Dynamo Master’s Team, his influence was felt around all of the Georgia water polo community and will be sorely missed.
“Kasi is one of the main reasons that Georgia Tech water polo has been such a positive experience for me as he is a great friend and a true mentor. It is definitely bittersweet to see him leave to Cleveland, but I know he will always continue to support the team. Georgia Tech water polo will definitely be left with a great void because Kasi is impossible to replace. However, he has left us in very capable hands in Brian and Steve and I am excited as always for the future of Georgia Tech water polo,” said President Patrick Slane.
In his place, Georgia Tech Water Polo welcomes Brian “Benny” Twynham as their new head coach, with assistant coach Steve Kuehnle. Both proud alumni of the program, they hope to continue to grow GT Water Polo, and keep the successes of its great line of coaches rolling.
